A Protective Garment for Volcanic Pollution
Volcanic pollution affects the air with
toxic gases and heavy ash fall.
Volcanic eruptions pose a huge threat to the health of surrounding communities. The air becomes polluted with toxic gases and volcanic ash that have the ability to travel thousands of kilometers from the eruption. Although evacuations take place, the pollutants still affect an incredibly wide range of the communities outside of evacuation zones.
The Health Hazards
AN OUTERWEAR GARMENT DESIGNED TO PROTECT WEARERS FROM HARMFUL VOLCANIC POLLUTANTS SUCH AS HAZARDOUS GASES + HEAVY ASH FALL.
Protecting the Body
protects the user's body from
falling ash as a plastic poncho would for rain. The hood prevents ash from falling onto the user's face/eyes. The sleeves are open to allow for mobility, but are adjustable for more or less protection.
material is used to make the garment lightweight, durable, and tear resistant. The fabric protects the skin from ash by having low friction and being abrasion resistant.
Protecting the Lungs
A respiratory mask is built into the poncho to protect the user's lungs. It is easily put on/taken off with the use of a size zipper. Elastic is sewn into the back to keep the mask streamlined and snug to the face.
Activated Carbon Cloth
layers filter out harmful airborne particles and chemicals such as ash and gas.
fits the natural curve of the face and protects the nose and mouth.
Increasing Visibility for Safety
Ash fall creates a blanket of volcanic smog that blocks sunlight and heavily reduces visibility. This becomes a safety hazard, especially for pedestrians on heavily populated roads.
is used to line and emphasize the figure, reflecting light in low light conditions and making the body more visible.
Adjustability for Comfort
are featured on the sides to create sleeves, bringing more security around the arms. The snap's trim also incorporates reflective material.
Durable Cords and Cord Locks
are used to adjust the hood and side sleeves to help ensure the fit of the garment according to the magnitude of protection the wearer wants.
The Poncho is Reversible
Dark grey for protection, and burgundy for casual wear.
It is important for the poncho not only to serve as a protective garment but also as one that can be wearable for every day use. This way the user is more likely to have it on hand for when it is needed.
Reversible for Wearability
A Hidden Pocket
is exposed on the reverse side of the poncho. On the outside, it's easily accessible. On the inside, it adds an extra layer of protection to personal items from the ash.
